Acupuncture in Maryland
A popular alternative medicine for pain relief, acupuncture is a healing art that has been helping people for centuries prior to Western medicine. Energy that flows throughout the body (called qi) has been defined and mapped. Our acupuncturist applies these concepts to help find blockages of energy or flow within the body. These are called “stagnations.”
If the signal is not efficient on an old TV or cell phone, you need to manipulate the antenna to achieve a good signal. The same concept can be applied to acupuncture. In acupuncture, the clinician uses needles to align the body and remove stagnations (blockages or “inefficiencies” in the body).
How Acupuncture Works
Acupuncture is based on the belief that we need balance in the flow of energy within our bodies, and pain occurs when this energy is blocked. The energy flow must be restored to relieve the pain and restore proper body function or organ balance.
Needles are inserted into points where sensory receptors are stimulated. Endorphins (hormones that act as our body’s natural pain killers) are then released, which has a very relaxing effect. Endorphins impact our hormonal systems, which is why acupuncture works well for back pain as well as infertility.
Acupuncture can:
- Promote tissue healing
- Decrease pain
- Improve movement restrictions
- Help with insomnia
- And more!
The effectiveness of acupuncture depends on how accurately the needles hit the designated points. If the needle is just a centimeter off, it can still be effective but the acoustic waves generated don’t travel nearly as far – only three or four centimeters, compared to four to eight if the needle is inserted in exactly the right spot.
Sometimes, patients experience immediate pain relief after just one treatment, but it varies from person to person. In some cases, several acupuncture treatment sessions may be necessary. Our team (chiropractors, physical therapists, acupuncturists, and exercise professionals) can sit down with you, assess your situation, and come up with the best plan – and we may recommend acupuncture.
