Ear Infections
You can have inner, middle and outer ear infections (and we offer treatment for all three!).
Inner ear infections: an inner ear infection, or labyrinthitis, is a very painful inflammatory disorder of the inner ear, or labyrinth - a system of tubes and canals that sends signals to your brain.
Inner ear infection symptoms: inner ear infection symptoms are different from middle and outer ear infections and include:
- Ringing or rushing sound inside the ear (called tinnitus)
- Temporary hearing loss
- Vertigo (sensation of spinning - not the same as dizziness)
- Nausea and vomiting
- Headache
- Loss of balance
These symptoms may also become worse with any head movements such as looking up or rolling over in bed. It's important to note that inner ear infections are very serious - they could be indicative of meningitis or even a brain tumor. If your child's infection is getting worse or the symptoms won't subside, they need immediate medical attention!
Middle ear infections: a middle ear infection, or otitis media, occurs behind the eardrum and is caused by bacteria or a virus. There are two types of middle ear infections - acute otitis media and chronic otitis media (usually occurs after acute otitis media or results from a poorly healed ruptured eardrum).
Middle ear infection symptoms: there are many middle ear infection symptoms, including:
- Ear pain
- Hearing loss
- Chills
- Feeling of fullness in the ear
- Ruptured eardrum (pus and blood draining from the ear, followed by pain relief)
Children may pull or rub their ears, have trouble sleeping at night, lose their appetite and are more fussy than usual when they have ear infections.
Outer ear infections: an outer ear infection (also known as acute external otitis or otitis externa) is an infection of the outer ear canal caused by bacteria. An outer ear infection is also referred to as swimmer's ear - outer ear infections frequently occur from water that stays in the ear after swimming. This creates a moist environment that facilitates bacteria growth. You can also get an outer ear infection by putting cotton swabs or your fingers in your ear, which damages the thin layer of skin that lines the ear canal.
Outer ear infection symptoms: if you have an outer ear infection, you'll likely experience pain in the outer ear as well as inflammation and irritation of the skin in your outer ear.
